Announcing Boys U11 Select Team - Spring 2017
Team Overview. In a step forward for the program, for the first time BLC has created a “Select” team for U11 boys (5th and 4th graders: birthdates 8/31/05-8/30/07). This team seeks to compete at the highest levels of youth lacrosse in the tri-state area with the goal of advanced player development at the individual and team level. The team will practice 2-3 times per week and compete in approximately 10 games or tournaments through an extended season from January 8 to June 24/25. Training sessions will be led by experienced coaches, possibly including a paid coach on weekdays. Interested players must try out for the team in January and attend pre-season practices in January and February. Players are expected to make lacrosse their primary spring sport, with a commitment to attend 90% of practices and games (including pre-season). Details are below.
Tryouts: January 8th and January 22nd, 3-5pm, Brooklyn Friends School (BFS) Lower Gym. One tryout session is required for all players, but we encourage players to attend both sessions.
Pre-Season Practice: Sundays January 29, February 5, 12, 26, 3-5pm, BFS Lower Gym
Regular Season Practice:
- Saturday mornings March 4-June 24, Pier 5 Brooklyn Bridge Park, 8a-10:30a (time tentative) OR games/tournaments
- Sundays March 5, 12, BFS Lower Gym 2-4pOR outdoors at Boys & Girls High School (time TBD, possibly 2-4p)
- Sundays March 19-June, Boys & Girls High School (time TBD, possibly 2-4p)
- Midweek Practice(s), time and place TBD (aiming for 5p-7p Mondays & Wednesdays)
Games/Tournaments: expect most games to be on Saturdays in NJ, Westchester or NYC (including Pier 5); carpooling will be available.
Coaching: Seth Basham, who has coached for BLC for 4 years, will be the head coach. He will have at least two assistant coaches, one of whom may be a paid coach to lead midweek practices.
Fees: $499 per player. To support paid coaching, additional field/gym time and additional games/tournaments, (along with insurance, U.S. Lacrosse membership and uniforms), fees will be higher than for other BLC teams. These fees are still much lower than for most other club lacrosse programs. Need-based scholarships may be available.
Scheduling Note: We recognize that is difficult to schedule other activities for your children without definitive timing of practices. Unfortunately, we must wait for field permits before we can create a definitive schedule. Please tentatively plan on the schedule outlined above and we will update it ASAP. Note that there will not be any games or practices on Memorial Day weekend, although we may plan a trip to the NCAA finals in Foxborough, MA for those interested. Our final tournament will be the weekend of June 24/25 (currently planned to be in Rider, NJ).
Registration: When registering, please be sure to check "yes" to be considered for U11 Select team. All players must be registered and pay initial $99 fee to try-out. If player makes squad, you will be billed balance of $400. If player doesn't make the team, he can still participate in the BLC Spring season on age-appropriate team. If player doesn't make U11 team, and chooses not to join an age-appropriate team, the $99 fee will be refunded.
