Thursday night, May 31st, was an AWESOME experience at our 3rd Annual Fundraiser. Our fundraiser committee chair, Arthur Schurr, officiated a great evening, as we said our goodbyes and thank-yous to Coach Joe, for his indelible service to the borough of Brooklyn; not just for lacrosse, but for community-building.
On behalf of the BLC family, I presented a wooden lacrosse stick, as a token of our appreciation. The hand-made stick was crafted by Wood Lacrosse, and was branded with the BLC logo and the quote, "Not Your Average Joe." Indeed, Joe is definitely extraordinary. As I mentioned at the fundraiser, Joe's shown commitment to diversity and inclusion, before they became social buzzwords.
We heard from an esteemed guest in Mat Levine (CityLax and Docs Lacrosse founder), who recounted the history of lacrosse in NYC and gave major props to Joe, for his contribution to the legacy of lacrosse in NYC and Brooklyn. We also received a great video message from Stone Evans, the junior lacrosse phenom, who sent a special "thank you" from his decked-out lacrosse cave. He highlighted BLC as his first lacrosse team experience, and thanked us for the work we continue to do, removing barriers of access to the game.
Another key moment was the naming of the Nocella Dedication Award (NDA). Given to two players (male and female) at the end of the season (June 10), the NDA recognizes players who embody the characteristics that the Nocella family demonstrated through their leadership of our organization. Not based on skill or athletic prowess, the NDA acknowledges players who contribute meaningfully to the game, the Brooklyn Lacrosse Club, and the community through their actions both on and off the field.
Melina Mackall, team parent and fundraiser committee board member, made a live-appeal urging people to help us satisfy our funding objectives:
Uniforms, indoor winter training facility, scholarships, tournament fund, field permit fund, and coaches compensation fund
Last, but not least, people got super excited about the raffle prizes, which included cool Game of Thrones swag, Warrior lacrosse equipment, a collection of comic books, a Fitbit, assorted gift certificates, and a sail boat cruise for 3 couples. Our board member, Tim Dearborn emceed the raffle in spectacular fashion, with the help of several U12 select players, who played the raffle table extremely closely- probably hoping to sway the picks... It was a night that will long be remembered.
If you were there, I truly hope you had a memorable experience.
Thank you to all who came out to show support and to all who contributed in any way they could. You all made our event, and I think Joe felt the love, so thank you. And finally, THANK YOU, JOE. We love you!
